The Mexican Café

The Mexican Café was established in 1983 and has since become an institution in Auckland and beyond. The restaurant offers food, drinks, entertainment and atmosphere - something for everybody to enjoy and a place where people can just be themselves. It is a unique ambience that stimulates all the senses and transports you to another world. Of course our customers also contribute to the atmosphere at the Mex and no two nights are ever the same. Upbeat or laid back, it's what you make of it.

While the atmosphere may change one thing that always stays the same is the consistency & quality of our food. We offer more than 40 dishes seasoned with the taste of Mexico and Southern California. Most of the spicy dishes can be adjusted to suit the individual (see more about Mexican Food in Menu section). There are approximately 140 seats and we are able to serve over 300 people on any given night.

We can cater for large groups and have a function room that can seat up to 45 people plus a range of set menus to cater for all tastes and budgets.  Bookings are recommended for groups of eight or more and you can book online here.

Our traditional cantina style bar is just the place to meet friends for a snack and a Margarita, or a place to chill out should you need to wait for a table. We offer over 80 different Tequilas, 18 beers (including Mexican beers), 35 wines, an exciting house cocktail list and, of course, the expertise and ingredients to create almost any cocktail you wish. We also offer non-alcoholic fruit smoothies and complimentary soft drinks for designated drivers.

Our outside deck often provides a more restful atmosphere where you can enjoy dinner in the balmy night air of summer or the warmth from the heaters in winter, as well as an amazing view of the magnificent Sky Tower across the road, weather permitting.

While we are mainly a Mexican restaurant, providing food, style and culture from Mexico, we celebrate all Latin American cultures in our choice of ­live bands, recorded music and delicious cocktails. The Mexican Café is open for lunch from Monday to Friday from 12 p.m. and for dinner seven nights a week from 5 p.m. We also offer Happy Hour prices on your favourite snacks, cocktails and beers from 5 - 7 pm every evening.
